Kroger Co. and Albertsons Cos. are considering a merger of the companies, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Cincinnati-based Kroger is one of the world's largest food retailers, with annual sales of $137.9 billion. For its part Boise, ID-based Albertsons saw $74 billion in sales over the last 12 months.

The third quarter was a mixed bag for eGrocery sales. While September sales slipped 3 percent (to $7.8 billion), the quarter finished up 4 percent (to $24.1 billion) vs. last year, according to the monthly Brick Meets Click/Mercatus Grocery Shopping Survey. The increase was driven by significant gains in delivery and to a lesser degree pickup.

In about eight short weeks, approximately one-third of all potatoes grown in the United States are harvested, sorted and stored.
