Tenor Jack Swanson was supposed to be doing Rossini's
La Cenerentola in January and February at Houston Grand Opera but those plans like many others were scuttled by COVID-19.
Instead he was offered and accepted the chance to film an HGO Digital installment of
Live at the Cullen, a selection of songs in recital with HGO Director of Artistic Operations and Chorus Master Richard Bado that will begin airing this Friday.
And although he is known for performing works by Rossini and Donizetti, with the exception of one final song by Rossini, Swanson's program decided upon by himself and Bado, will present a variety of music by other composers.

Youthful radiance and earnest sincerity characterize the singing of tenor Brian Giebler, a Syracuse native, in his first solo recording “A Lad’s Love,” which is up for a Grammy Award on Sunday. If there were more tenors with voices as clear, weightless and inviting then maybe song recitals wouldn’t be such a rarity.
Besides the polished performances by Giebler and pianist Steven McGhee, what also makes the recent disc from Bridge Records so beguiling is the intertwined thematic strands that unite the repertoire. The selections are songs composed by five British men who lived during the first half of the last century. Among them, Benjamin Britten is the best known and also the youngest.

MUSIC can take us out of ourselves and bear us away from life’s challenges.
Taking their inspiration from the words in Franz Schubert’s song “An Die Musik” (To Music), Bethany Hill, soprano, and Penelope Cashman, piano, gave us a concert that did exactly that.
Hill is an Adelaide soprano who is equally at home on the operatic stage and in intimate chamber-music settings. She is a passionate performer of early music and has appeared as a recitalist around Australia. She has performed roles in Purcell’s “Dido & Aeneas”, roles in several Mozart operas, Schoenberg’s “Erwartung” and Handel’s “Saul”.
