When Andrea Canny takes the stage in Theatre South Playhouse’s production of “Nunsense,” she’ll have a longer commute than usual. The Central Florida favorite is visiting from her new home in Ohio to star in the musical, running through Feb. 20.

Onstage at Winter Park Playhouse, “Trav’lin” is a sure cure for the doldrums of these cloudy and Florida-chilly days and nights. George, a retired porter for the Pullman train line and self-proclaimed mayor of his neighborhood, “cleans up messes” that other people create — with plenty of humor, heart and a wonderful catalog of bluesy and toe-tapping songs.

The Winter Park Playhouse got a jump on its 2022-23 season by looking to the past.

It’s the encore the arts didn’t want. With COVID-19 surging again in Florida, local theater companies and other cultural organizations have been forced to regroup, revamp and re-mask. Already two theater productions have canceled performances because of COVID outbreaks among the cast, another theater’s fall schedule is up in the air, and Opera Orlando has postponed its fundraising gala — until next May.

“Crazy for Gershwin” is a homegrown production; the salute to the incomparable songwriting brothers was conceived by the Winter Park Playhouse’s Roy Alan, Christopher Leavy and Todd Allen Long.
