被験者は18歳から35歳までの独身男性で、ランダムに2組に分けられて揺れる吊り橋とコンクリートの丈夫な橋を渡った。橋の中央では魅力的な若い女性が待っていて、「私は心理学を勉強している大学院生です。調査に協力してもらえませんか」と声をかけられる。
被験者の男性がOKして簡単な心理テストに答えると、「結果を詳しく聞きたければ電話してください」と電話番号を書いた紙を渡される。
この実験はものすごく印象的だし、デートの場所としてジェットコースターやホラー映画が人気がある理由をうまく説明するので、恋愛の心理学では頻繁に紹介されている。だがその後、「この実験手法では結果を一般化できないのではないか」との批判が出
