A police officer hero, Bernie Sanders' mittens, history-making Kamala Harris, and the dramatic change in tone in Washington all contributed to the momentous event.

The last six years of American politics have been really hard on some of us up in Canada. Yesterday’s peaceful transition of power on President Joe Biden’s Inauguration Day not only brought a sense of calm but also these delightful Bernie Sanders memes.
Bernie arrived wearing thick homemade mittens, carrying an envelope like he was stopping off at the post office later, and basically just being Bernie Sanders. Then the internet did their thing.
As per Ruby Cramer, Buzzfeed News political reporter, “the manila envelope Bernie Sanders carried onto the west front of the US Capitol was the manila envelope his inauguration tickets came in”, and “Bernie’s mittens are made by Jen Ellis, a teacher from Essex Junction, Vt. She gave them to him 2+ years ago and was surprised when he began wearing them on the campaign trail. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece made from recycled plastic bottles

Internet users were obsessed with what Harris 21-year-old stepdaughter Ella Emhoff was wearing too.

Michelle Obama looking fly
People were also impressed when Michelle Obama arrived looking sharp in her burgundy outfit.
A TikTok user, who said Obama is out here serving , made a video of her walking through the Capitol like the viral walk challenge that requires users to film themselves walking slowly in a cute outfit to the tune of Let me see if you can walk.

The mittens stole the show.
While Kamala Harris inaugural outfit for her swearing-in ceremony as Vice President made news for obvious reasons, the wardrobe game was nonetheless won by an oddly surprising candidate - Bernie Sanders.
The socialist Democrat, formerly a potential Presidential candidate himself, turned up to Capitol Hill on Wednesday for the swearing-in ceremony of the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, wearing a casual, brown coat and a rather unimpressed look. But the highlight of the outfit was a pair of woolen mittens that Bernie made sure to never take off. Just like the ones grandmother wove when you were little.

The presidential inauguration ceremony on Wednesday looked a lot different than in previous years. Masks were a reminder of a pandemic still raging. The ceremonial parade was canceled and some customs went virtual. In a historically rare snub, a sitting President Trump was absent for the swearing in ceremony of his successor, Joe Biden.
But, at least for the sartorially minded, an abundance of strategically selected outfits helped elevate an unusual and scaled-back ceremony.
There were repurposed woolen mittens, elaborate face masks and dramatic collars. Over on social media, amateur fashion sleuths looked on, attaching symbolism and pronouncing the emergence of new clothing aesthetics. Bright color choices told their own stories and paid tribute to leaders past.
