A spinoff of the Australian sensation Miss Fisher s Murder Mysteries, the swinging 1960s crime series follows the fearless and spirited Peregrine Fisher (Logie Award-nominated Geraldine Hakewill, Wanted), the niece of world-class adventuress and private detective Phryne Fisher, as she inherits a windfall from her famous aunt and sets out to become an exceptional sleuth in her own right.
Set on Waiheke Island, local drama The Gulf returns for a second season on Monday, March 1.
REVIEW: New Zealand’s answer to Sarah Lund is back. Still haunted by the accident that killed her husband Alex and left her with severe memory loss, Detective Jess Savage (Kate Elliott) is trying to move on, as the second series of
The Gulf (which debuts at 9pm on Monday, March 1 on Three and then on ThreeNow) gets underway. After all, she has her pregnant daughter Ruby (Timmie Cameron) to look after. That’s tempered though with the guilt of having just remembered her involvement in her husband’s death and the recent trauma of her long-term mentor’s attempts to kill her only being thwarted by her partner Detective Justin Harding (Ido Drent) putting bullets into his head.

As it shifts fluidly between comedy, romance and drama, one of the main pleasures of this eight-part Swedish series is its unpredictability. Set in a small, financially troubled book-publishing house, it charts the arrival of the new strategy specialist, Sofie (Ida Engvoll), whose job is to propel Lund & Lagerstedt into a more secure future. She arrives impatient and full of confidence, but events take an unexpected turn during her encounters with young IT technician Max (Bjorn Mosten).

After he spies her enjoying what is supposed to be a private moment of pleasure in her office, filming it on his phone, he suddenly holds the upper hand, as she’s been remonstrating with him for making too much noise. But rather than blackmailing her, which she expects, he asks only that she take him out for lunch. After that, he says, he’ll delete the incriminating footage.
