Caeleb Dressel dropped farther and farther behind, a far cry from the dominant swimmer he was at the last Olympics. In his first major competition since a long layoff, Dressel finished 29th in the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. nationals on Tuesday, falling far short of qualifying for the world championships in an event he won at Tokyo two years ago. Dressel touched the wall behind the other seven swimmers in the last of eight preliminary heats.

Caeleb Dressel has been the world's best in the 50 free since 2017, but his recent leave of absence puts that reign into question this summer.

Looking to improve on his bronze from the 2022 Worlds, Michael Andrew leads the field in the 50 fly but could come up against gold medalist Caeleb Dressel.

The first day of U.S. Nationals will include the women's and men's 200 fly, women's and men's 100 free, women's 800 free and men's 1500 free.

The men's 100 freestyle in America is entering a new era in which Caeleb Dressel is not the clear top dog, and other swimmers will have to step up.

Rising Arizona State sophomore Jonny Kulow swam a 48.89 in the 100 free this morning, the seventh fastest time for the 17-18 age group ever.

Held was 48.7, a season-best and promising sign just 6 weeks out from the world champ trials at the end of June in Indianapolis.
