Safer Intersections Act News Today

In a preliminary vote last week, the DC Council unanimously approved the Safer Intersections Act, which will prohibit right-on-reds except at designated intersections, as well as allow cyclists to treat stoplights as yield signs. Street safety advocates hailed the news — and questioned why the dangerous maneuver was ever allowed at all.

The D.C. Council voted unanimously to pass a bill in the first step to ban right turns at red lights and allow cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs by 2025.

DDOT now opposes council bill to ban right turns at right light at nearly every DC intersection citing lack of safety benefit data.
