TJPW Yes! Wonderland 2021 Recap & Reactions: Back On Top By Jericu on May 6, 2021, 12:40am EDT +
Well, this turned out to be a bigger show than I expected! Considering how much attention was being put on the CyberFight Festival show happening on June 6th, it really felt like Yes! Wonderland was effectively a filler show, certainly a major show with effort put into production but not something that would have much of consequence happen outside of the 3-way match that determined the top title challenger for the next show. In my predictions piece of this show I guessed that none of the 3 titles would change hands, and I ve ended up with only a 33% accuracy rating! That said, there were many matches in what ended up being, on balance, a very good show for TJPW, which I highly recommend you watch for yourself. Let s go through everything from top to bottom:
Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling Yes! Wonderland 2021: Introductions, Preview, and Predictions By Jericu on May 2, 2021, 2:30pm EDT 13
Around these parts, I am mostly known for talking about the AEW Women s Division, which mostly involves being mad at the bad booking of it. HOWEVER! There is another wrestling promotion I follow, another which I watch and hold dear to my heart, that being the Japanese women s promotion of Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling. It s great stuff, a fun promotion that holds many wrestlers I consider myself a big fan of. If you follow AEW, you might be a fan of a few of their talents as well; Yuka Sakazaki is a former Princess Tag Team and Princess of Princess champion, and AEW Women s Eliminator Tournament standout Maki Itoh makes her home in TJPW as well. My personal favorite, Shoko Nakajima, has made a couple AEW appearances as well, including this very good match against Riho from Dark which I am obligated to share whenever I mention the Big Kaiju.
The story of Jim Crockett Jr., and the rise and fall of Jim Crockett Promotions is the lead story in the current double-sized issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
We look at the death of Crockett, the Crockett s family original involvement in wrestling, how Jim took over the moves he made in building a small market territory into one of the big three companies in the U.S., original plans and why they changed, the rise of Ric Flair, where Jm was a Hall of Fame promoter, the fight with Vince McMahon from 1984-88, getting the TBS deal, what led to JCP selling to Turner, the framework of the NWA in the 70s and 80s, the rise of the super show concept, mistakes made at the end, what happened when TBS took over, attempts to get back in wrestling and life after wrestling.
The death of Tom Cole this week takes us back to one of the most sordid pro wrestling stories of the last 50 years, which involved media heavyweights at the time like Phil Donahue, Larry King, Geraldo Rivera and Phil Mushnick. It s the lead story of a new double issue of the Observer.
We look at the story and its tragic end this past week and all the key characters involved. We look at Cole s death, what exactly happened to him, different media appearances at the time, the WWF first settling his case, the unique plans for the Phil Donahue show, at the time the leading daytime talk show in the U.S. with a gigantic audience and how Vince McMahon planned the show and why it never transpired the way it was planned. Cole s memories of what happened, and things that triggered his past including a first suicide attempt that few knew about. This is a major piece of wrestling history that has been largely hidden except from those who were around at the time.
