Members of the community where I live did not start a vigilante group because the Nigerian minister of Defence asked us to protect ourselves. We decided to over the spate of robberies we were experiencing in our community in Benin City. The nature of these robberies resembles the kind perpetrated on residents by Boko Haram – they are directed at the vulnerable and women. Sometimes, they are regular and at other times irregular, depending on the time of day and depending on the level of vigilante observed by residents. When the criminals observe that residents may have gone to work, they break in, steal household items and make a break for it. At night, they lay ambush at victims at very isolated spots frequented by poor and struggling women, and take their phones, hard-earned cash and make a dash into the nearby bushes. The Edo State Government yesterday, restated that it will not cede any part of its land for grazing of cattle in the state.
In a statement issued in Benin City, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, said its position on the issue was clear and had not changed since it insisted that it would not cede land to herdsmen.
“Our attention has been drawn to misleading and false media reports claiming that Governor Godwin Obaseki, has agreed to provide grazing land for herders in the state.
“Our position on grazing land is clear and has not shifted, which is that there is no free land for grazing in Edo State. Grazing is an economic activity just like poultry and piggery or any other agricultural enterprise. The Edo State Government will not cede any land for grazing.
BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has partnered the Concerned Edo Citizens, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), to increase awareness on safety protocols to check the spread of the second wave of coronavirus (COVID-19) in major areas, markets, event centres and other public spaces in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha and Egor Local Government Areas of the state.
The group, whose campaign kicked off in Oredo LGA, visited Lagos Street, Ibiwe, Igun Street, Sakponba Road, Airport Road, Sapele Road and parts of GRA, Ugbor, and Ugbor-Amagba.
Some markets visited include Oba Market; Yanga Market; Oliha Market; Uwa Market; Ekiosa Market; Oka Market and Idogbo Market.
Edo teachers shun schools despite restraining court order

Primary school teachers in Edo State on Monday stayed away from public schools as directed by the the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, despite a restraining court order.
The Edo State Government on Monday secured the restraining order from the National Industrial Court in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
The teachers are on an indefinite strike over what they described as “the state government’s failure to meet its 10-point age-long demands.”
