Two San Diegopolice officers died Friday when a wrong-way driver hit their car in a head-on collision, according to reports.  California High Patrol (CHP) responded at about 10:20 a.m. Friday to a call about a Honda Civic driving down the I-5 the wrong way. A call about a crash shortly followed.  The driver of the errant vehicle, as well as the two police officers in the other car, all died upon impact, FOX 5 San Diego reported.  Heroic efforts from San Diego Fire weren’t able to rescue any of the occupants in either of the vehicles, CHP spokesperson Salvador Castro said at the scene.

CHP officer injured in Escondido crash is 13-year veteran

SAN DIEGO    A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer badly injured in an Escondido crash earlier this week is a 13-year agency veteran and Medal of Valor recipient, an honor earned for rescuing an unconscious man trapped in a burning car. The CHP on Wednesday identified the officer, who was injured shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, as Officer Joseph Heightman. The crash happened as Heightman rode his motorcycle east on West Via Rancho Parkway near Lomas Seranas Drive when a Nissan Rogue took a left turn directly into his path. Heightman was thrown from the motorcycle in the crash, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said.
