The man who the police say shot eight people, killing three, at Michigan State University had been living with his father in Lansing for about a year, neighbors say.

The gunfire on Monday night left three dead and five critically injured. For some students, the familiar rituals of sorrow, anger and disbelief were playing out again.

The attack at Michigan State came almost five years after a shooting at Parkland High School in Florida and a year and a half after a shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan.

Students and nearby residents waited anxiously for hours as the police searched for the 43-year-old gunman. He later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The man the police say shot eight students, three fatally, before killing himself had roots in New Jersey and no apparent connection to the university.
