It remains unclear where the Canada lynx can survive as Washington’s forests continue to rapidly change, but a new recovery plan released this month could give the roughly 50 remaining lynx in Washington state a fighting chance.
Washington is facing a forest health crisis. As a whole, the state’s 20-year forest plan calls for specialized treatments – including prescribed burns – on roughly 1.25 million acres of forest lands.
Montana has dispatched emergency crews to help fight raging wildfires north of its border, under an agreement allowing northern U.S. states and southern Canadian provinces to work together to battle wildland blazes. It is the first time this season the Northwest Compact has been used, but there is precedent for Canadian crews doing the same for the U.S. .
