if she loses iowa and new hampshire, let s ask these two democrats, what will happen? doug, what are the risks to hillary in iowa and new hampshire? what happens if clinton actually loses in both those states? john raises precisely the right question. if hillary wins one of those two, she ll be fine, she ll roll to the nomination. but the big but given that she lost iowa in 2008 when the polls showed her much more competitive, if she loses iowa and loses new hampshire, loses the first two, it would be complete chaos. the donors would get upset. the sanders support would skyrocket. certainly the financial part and the media would have the feeding frenzy. i still think hillary would win the nomination, julie, but it would be a degree of uncertainty in a year that pat and john and i have remarked and i think correctly said this is marked by much more than we can predict.
i ve not seen senator sanders debate before. he s a very smart man. but, you know, debates can task you very different and make it very difficult for you in those situations if you re not used to them. we have famous debate moments and i m sure we ll be cueing them up tomorrow and looking at the latest cnn poll, michael, it shows which candidate is most attractive to black democratic voters in south carolina. hillary clinton winning out big even if joe biden gets into the race. as we look at this, the sanders support, it is in the single digits. so is he a new englander to break through nationally, michael? that s going to be a real challenge for him. dealing with a couple things here. one, the clintons as a package and hillary clinton, as well, has a history. w the black community. they have been on a front line on a number of issue that is are important to african-americans and so she s got some built-in
a couple of months. i you think what he is trying to do obviously with the meeting in warren with some of the donors. he is trying to line up to see whether he has got what he needs. but i think if i were him, what i would do is do what reagan did in 76 when he ran against ford for the nomination and two weeks before the convention he announced that he would take richard schweikart, a liberal, let s call him a moderate republican senator as his running mate, in advance, this is pretty rare, as a way to balance his ticket to get him over the top. it didn t work. but you think what biden should do, what i would do if i were him, i would announce in advance, if she would accept it, that elizabeth warren would be my running mate. think of, this everybody assumes if biden joins the campaign he is going to immediately inherit all the sanders support and go live on a desert island somewhere. in 1968, that s what happened, bobby kennedy came. in he took over all the

joe biden is happy to run and lose. i think the trial balloon sets up a process in which he can have a frank discussion with president obama about where his support is going to go. if the obama team, as is leaked all over town, is horrified by how much baggage she s taken on with the e-mail scandal and whether or not she s becoming a beatable candidate in general election, then they need an exit ramp and they need joe biden. sanders support will go to joe biden. before he makes it official, there has to be this period in which people promise him money and backup. both sides of the aisle feel the anger, kind of the visceral thing. i agree. on specific issues, they re not going to leave him. if you look at that 22%, i think there are people who don t trust her and would be willing to go with biden. he s everything she s not.
