Penn State University Libraries has expanded its robust scholarly research potential of one of America’s foremost 20th-century writers through the acquisition of the Toby and Betty Bruce Collection of Ernest Hemingway. The collection includes unpublished writing, manuscripts, handwritten letters and notes, more than 1,000 photos, other documents and memorabilia.

After his second marriage crumbled in 1939, Ernest Hemingway, a notorious pack rat, left his belongings in the storeroom of Sloppy Joe’s Bar, his favorite watering hole in Key West, Florida. He never returned to collect them.

The trove of items deposited in Key West, now part of a new archive at Penn State, includes four unpublished short stories, drafts of manuscripts and boxes of personal effects.

This time around, the two chronicled the life of Hemingway. The three-part, six-hour documentary film premieres at 7 p.m. Monday, April 5, on New Mexico PBS Channel 5.1. The first part is called “A Writer” and covers 1899 to 1929. The second part is titled “The Avatar” and covers 1929 to 1944. It airs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 6.
