Rates to rise in Ramsey

Rates in Ramsey have been set at 415 pence in the pound for the forthcoming financial year. That’s a rise of just under 1 per cent. Commissioners in the town cited increasing costs and a number of improvement projects as reasons for the rise. It will mean owners of a three-bedroom house will pay around 9.5 pence per week more than last year. Higher disposal charges at the Energy from Waste Plant and the authority’s contributions to the Northern Civic Amenity Site have both been detailed as factors in the board’s decision.
Staff on hand to help with emergencies

Any urgent housing matters in Ramsey are still able to be dealt with, despite the Island being under a period of lockdown. The chairman of the local authority has confirmed there are procedures in place which allow staff to enter properties in an emergency. A list of services provided during lockdown has been published online in the Ramsey Commissioners Escalation Plan and circulated in a newsletter. Those doing last-minute Christmas shopping in Ramsey are asked to be considerate if driving in.
Commissioners in the town have urged people to park ‘considerately’ to help boost trade.
They say spaces used by business owners or residents, especially those within disc zones, could deter potential customers.
Parking in the town is free all year round and the local authority says retailers have been very busy during the festive period.
Andy Cowie, Chairman of Ramsey Town Commissioners, commented: ’It has been great to see that our independent retailers, businesses, cafes and restaurants have been so busy during the Christmas shopping season. The only downside from this is the impact on available parking spaces.’
