Sandy-sawyerDawsonville-city-council>> reporter: neighbors began noticing smoke coming out of this house, used as a day care. chris reddingberg immediately tried to help. >> just went to the back door with two other neighbors, saw what we could, try to get any kids out because she was screaming there were kids inside. we couldn't get any out. >> reporter: he says the owner of jackie's day care, seen here in the red shirt and hat, pulled out two of the children, but the smoke just got too thick. they had to wait for firefighters. sandy sawyer witnessed the chaotic effort to save the babies. >> i've never seen that before. the ambulance couldn't get through because of all the firetrucks. and the lady with the day care wasn't sure they had all the babies, so she was really distraught. >> reporter: in all, seven children were rescued, aged 18 months to 3 years, but not all survived. fire investigators say sorting out the facts will take some

unusual remarks and how americans and other foreigners are try to flee libya. >> it's so crazy to the circumstances. trying to get out on the ferry but the seas are too rough. unbelievable story. also ahead, tough questions after several children die in a day care center fire in houston. who was in charge and how many kids were there? >> just tragic. also coming up a little later, the president celebrates black history month by enjoying classic motown sound. anyone and everyone was there. >> smokey robinson. john legend. president busting a move. before all that we move to the american trying to leave libya on that ferry. they've been waiting for better weather to finally get out. >> they're among thousands leaving libya as fighting heats up later today. abc's alex marquardt reports on growing pressure from libya. >> reporter: the people here are growing in power and courage, taking the battle to gadhafi's special units and foreign mercenaries in city after city. in eastern libya, a protester took the wheel of this armored vehicle, crowds lifted weapons to the sky. meanwhile, gadhafi continues to see top officials defecting. one of his closest aides and his cousin is asking for asylum in egypt. so gadhafi took to the air waves, phoning into libyan tv with another rambling diatribe accusing the u.s. and al qaeda of the uprising against him. he said young protesters were given hallucinogenic drugs by bin laden, that something was slipped into their nescafe coffee. who's in control of his country tonight? most libyans live near the coast and throughout the east the opposition is in control and gadhafi's forces have been pushed out. the battle for control is raging in the west and the cities surrounding gadhafi's base in the capital tripoli. those battles were deadly. and who are the protesters? everyday libyans, young and old, waving the libyan flag from before gadhafi took power more than four decades ago. foreigners aren't sticking around to see how it plays out. they're getting out. one lucky american boarded a ship while hundreds of other americans are stranded in a ferry, waiting for better weather. alex marquardt, abc news in eastern libya. a terror suspect from saudi arabia is due in a texas courtroom today charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. prosecutors say 20-year-old khalid aldawsari bought explosive chemicals online. they say he wanted to blow up dams, nuclear sites and home of former president george w. bush. three children are dead and four others are hospitalized after a fire at a home day care center in texas. ktrk reports from houston. >> reporter: neighbors began noticing smoke coming out of this house, used as a day care. chris reddingberg immediately tried to help. >> just went to the back door with two other neighbors, saw what we could, try to get any kids out because she was screaming there were kids inside. we couldn't get any out. >> reporter: he says the owner of jackie's day care, seen here in the red shirt and hat, pulled out two of the children, but the smoke just got too thick. they had to wait for firefighters. sandy sawyer witnessed the chaotic effort to save the babies. >> i've never seen that before. the ambulance couldn't get through because of all the firetrucks. and the lady with the day care wasn't sure they had all the babies, so she was really distraught. >> reporter: in all, seven children were rescued, aged 18 months to 3 years, but not all survived. fire investigators say sorting out the facts will take some time. >> a lot of work, a lot of pain, we understand we're not really sure about the structure of the family at this point. so, there's a lot of work left for us to do. >> reporter: records show jackie's day care has been licensed for just about a year. neighbors say they would often see the kids go on walks in the area. he just wished he could have helped more. >> just looked to see what we could do and there wasn't anything we could do. it was too hot. >> reporter: too smokey? >> tear, too much smoke. >> reporter: the caregiver for the seven children is also in the hospital. investigators have not released the names or exact ages of any of the victims. on houston west side, reporting for abc news. it has been two days since rescuers pulled survivors from the rubble in cyst christchurch, new zealand. more than 100 people are known dead from the tragedy, but about twice that many are still missing. when rescuers find victims now, the news is usually not good. >> unfortunately, there were some people in there who were deceased. >> in some cases we will need antemortem data such as fingerprints, dna, dental records. >> about 120 people were inside a christchurch office building that collapsed and caught fire. among them were 80 asian students learning english. it's believed, though, there are no survivors. boeing has landed a $35 billion defense contract. one of the biggest ever. boeing will build nearly 200 giant airborne refueling tankers for the air force. these are considered flying gas stations. the last ones were made about 50 years ago. the steel will mean tens of thousands of new jobs, many in washington state and kansas. nearly 2,000 teachers in the providence, rhode island, school district expect to lose their jobs. that is nearly every public school teacher in that city. termination notices went out yesterday. state law says school boards must notify teachers by march 1st if they might be let go before the next term. administrators say the notices give them flexibility as they try to close a $40 million deficit. charlie sheen has trashed hotel rooms, spent time in rehab and been arrested for domestic violence but now his big mouth may have finally derailed his career. last night production of "two and a half men" was suspended. >> i'm experienced promiscuity. this is polygamy. >> reporter: for the better part of the last decade, it has been the biggest network comedy on television. but tonight "two and a half men" is shut down after charlie sheen's bizarre rant on a radio talk show. >> you're completely clean, aren't you? >> 100%. you know, here's your first pee test. next one goes in your mouth. no, you won't get high. it's all good. it's all good, guys. quit panicking. >> reporter: in the 20-minute live interview sheen says he healed himself, insists he's ready to return to work. then attacks the show's producers and creator chuck laurie. >> look what i'm dealing with. i'm dealing with fools and trolls because don't have time for these clowns. don't have time for their judgment and stupidity. you know, they lay down with their ugly wives in front of their ugly children and look at their loser lives and say, i can't process it. well, no, you never will. stop trying. sit back and enjoy the show. >> reporter: it all comes after sheen trashed his room after a night of partying at the plaza hotel. and a series of disturbing public outbursts. cbs and warner brothers announced they had had enough. based on the totality of charlie sheen's statements, conduct and condition, cbs and warner brothers television have decided to discontinue production of "two and a half men" for the remainder of the season. >> to clarify, the show is not officially canceled, at least not yet, after the announcement ending production, sheen sent a letter to tmz in which he called the show's creator a contaminated little maggot who, quote, can't handle my power. >> maybe charlie will get a job in pr next. an update on a story we reported yesterday, the controversial anti-abortion billboard in new york city is being taken down. the sign pictured african-american girl with a caption that says, quote, the most dangerous place for an african-american is in the womb. the billboard company says it's being removed in the interest of public safety. >> the billboard company taking it down on their own. finally drying out in the south today after a wave of severe storms slammed more than a half dozen states. as thunderstorms battered little rock, arkansas, a bolt of lightning struck the capitol dome. it was quite to see. no major damage was caused. that storm system in the south spawned at least ten tornadoes. in memphis winds top 80 miles an hour, trees and power lines were blown down. there's plenty of damage. utility crews are busy restoring power you have to let us know which way to go. everyone's saying natalie portman looks good however annette benning could be the dark horse here. >> yeah. i mean, natalie portman certainly pulls off the role of a lifetime with "black swan." annette bening is a legend in hollywood, a lot of fans within the academy but natalie portman has been actively campaigning for this role. not only that for the terrorism. this guy was living down in texas. >> right. also ahead in this half hour, the unrest in libya could hit the boiling point today. the u.n. plans to put even more pressure now on moammar gadhafi. later, a rare look inside michael jackson's family. hear how his mother and three children are now coping. >> robin roberts did that interview. she said they seem like normal kids despite their dad was a huge star. >> he was a great father. people say, the kids are really normal. >> that family is fascinating, to say the least. first, a college student from saudi arabia is expected to appear in u.s. federal court in texas today one day after he was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. >> prosecutors say the plot involved hiding bomb material inside baby carriages and also dolls for an attack on dams, nuclear plants and even the home of an ex-president. karen travers has the details. good morning, careen. >> reporter: good morning. this was a chilling announcement from the fbi and they're crediting a tip with leading them to this terror suspect. law enforcement officials say this man, khalid aldawsari was the real deal. a bona fide terrorist threat. >> he is your classic lone wolf type terrorist. in fact, he's potentially the scariest type. >> reporter: the chemical engineering student from saudi arabia is suspected of plotting large-scale attacks using bombs. on the tart list, nuclear power plants, dams in colorado and california, backpack bombs for a dallas nightclub, streets in new york city. perhaps most shocking, former george w. bush's dallas home, referred to by the suspect as the tyrant's house. >> this guy appears to be very serious. >> reporter: law enforcement officials said the case was alarming. the young saudi was able to live largely undetected in the united states. the tip came on february 1st. the carolina biological supply notified law enforcement officials that aldawsari purchased a chemical that can be used to make a high explosive. two weeks later armed with special court authorized warrants fbi officials searched his apartment, finding a bomb-making factory, hazmat suit, lab equipment, wires, clocks and chemicals used to make explosives. much of it bought online at amazon.com. he also signaled his intentions to carry out terrorist attacks on a blog he maintained and in his diary. the fbi believes aldawsari was in the final stages of his terrorist plot. he's been charged with an attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and he'll appear in a federal court in texas today. rob and peggy? now shifting gears to the latest in libya. the first international action against moammar gadhafi could come as early as today right here in new york. the u.n. security council meets this afternoon to discuss what action to take against the gadhafi regime. several sanctions are now being considered. diplomats will not rule out travel bans, asset freezes against the regime, as well as an arms embargo. in libya, forces loyal to gadhafi are battling the roll back to the violent uprising that's advancing onto the city of tripoli. alex marquardt reports from the eastern part of the country where opposition leaders have already taken control. >> reporter: a country divided, battles raging in western libya around gadhafi's stronghold, the capital of tripoli. protesters clashing in city after city, while here in the east the opposition has taken full control. the mood was jubilant today as protesters brandished weapons and took armored vehicles on joy rides. as the resistance grows, so, too, does gadhafi's erratic behavior. he took to the airwaves, phoning in to libya state television. even the anchor looked bewildered as gadhafi made a trademark rambling statement, accusing the u.s. and al qaeda of fomenting the uprising against him. saying the young protesters were given hallucinogenic drugs by osama bin laden, that something was slipped into their nescafe coffee. we met many protesters, young and old, steadfast in their demands. >> we want him to banish. he killed our brothers. he killed our families. he arrested our people. >> reporter: despite the fury being directed at gadhafi by these protesters for decades of oppression, this is very much a celebration. these people feel like they've already won. they carried the red, black and green colors of the pre-gadhafi monarchy. the flag was everywhere, carried through the crowds, painted on children's faces, by car, on foot or evacuated by air, foreigners can't get out fast enough. hundreds of americans are still waiting to be evacuated. for those still stranded in libya, hopes that the scenes of violence and chaos that have embodied this uprising will subside soon. alex marquardt in eastern libya. >> beside the uprising expected after friday prayers today in libya, police in jordan expect widespread protest against recent attacks on pro-government rallies. in bahrain today is mourning for seven demonstrators killed in fights with security forces and today is also a day of rage in iraq as anti-government protesters take their anger to the streets. oil prices dropped for the first time in nine days after word libya's cut production less than originally feared but americans are still paying more for gas. abc's business editor dan arnall explains why. get ready for pain at the gas pump. gas prices are $3.19 a gallon, the highest since the record year 2008. back then the average peaked at $4.11 a gallon during the summer driving season. how does this happen? before the events in the middle east there was generally a balance of global supply and demand. 86 million barrels of production, 86 million barrels of consumption. if libya's share, about 2% of the world's oil supply goes away, that balanced picture gets upset. that means places like europe may not have the oil they were counting on for gas, diesel and jet fuel. they start competing for supplies we're relying on. fears the unrest could spread. the number one and three oil producers are ripe for revolution, and any slowdown there could quickly send oil prices into the stratosphere. as prices of crude and gas rise, so does everything else. where does that end? economic slowdown. >> that was abc's dan arnall. jet fuel prices are also going up. most major carriers increased fares this week and another round of hikes could be just around the corner. the oldest surviving shuttle has blasted off for its last mission. "discovery" is set to dock with the international space station tomorrow and deliver a humanoid robot. as bob woodruff reports, "discovery's" mission began nearly 30 years ago. >> reporter: the "discovery's" crew of six said a final prayer before boarding as record crowds lined the beaches and causeways of florida to witness "discovery's" final launch. >> the final lift-off of "discovery." >> reporter: over three decades of space flight "discovery" has logged more than 140 million miles and spent 352 days in orbit. >> lift-off of space shuttle "discovery." >> reporter: it's the most traveled spacecraft in history, beaming back spectacular imagery from the final frontier. >> i'm always struck by that. it's beautiful, powerful. it's almost overwhelming, is the way it feels to me. >> reporter: when eileen collins became the first woman to pilot a shuttle, it was aboard "discovery." from "discovery" dr. bernard harris became the first african-american to walk in space. skinny," this never ending drama, charlie sheen's hit show "two and a half men" is put on hold. how the star is involved in a really, really nasty war of words. charlie may have shot himself in the foot big time here. first, hundreds of americans are trying to flee libya. they may get their chance to do so today, improving weather is now expected to allow their ferry to leave. >> citizens of other countries who have made it out describe a frightening scene, horrible images, bodies hanging from power poles, trucks full of corpses. lara setrakian reports. >> reporter: the fighting on thursday centered on a gateway city to the capital tripoli. witnesses say anti-government protesters have been staging a sit-some at a mosque, where loyalists attacked them with heavy artillery. al jazeera spoke to one resident. >> they shot the people in the head and in the chest, direct, so they was trying to kill the people, not just fire on them. >> reporter: fighting intensified in other cities near tripoli. anti-government forces claimed control of misurata. in the capital, gadhafi's stronghold thousands of army and mercenaries struck back in the city. in a rambling phone call to state tv, the four-decade dictator accused al qaeda of being behind the uprising. >> translator: it is bin laden who is doing this to your sons. this is a fact. this is international terrorism. >> reporter: as the violence continues, foreigners are fleeing the country. thousands descended on the port of benghazi. the british navy sent the "h.m. srchlts come cumberland" some u.s. citizens were happy to get a catch to malta. >> wow, really good to see the union jack. >> reporter: unrest in libya has halted oil production by at least a half, pushing global prices above $100 a barrel for the first time since 2008 and threatening the u.s. economy with a return to recession. lara setrakian, abc news, dubai. those oil prices retreated yesterday to the lowest level in more than a week, but in early overseas trading prices were up again slightly. today u.n. security council meets here in new york to continue sanctions against the gadhafi regime. diplomats will not rule out travel bans, asset freezes, even an arms embargo. federal agents say a terror plot has been foiled but a quick-thinking chemical supplier to tipped off the fbi. khalid aldawsari is expected to appear in a texas federal court today charged in that plot. prosecutors say he planned to blow up dams nuclear plants and even the dallas home of former george w. bush. at least 113 people are now confirmed dead in this week's earthquake in new zealand and the final death toll there is expected to be at least three times that. hundreds of search teams, some from here in the u.s., are now searching for survivors. authorities say they have pulled nothing but bodies from the rubble for the past 48 hours. two confirmed dead were infants. one killed by a fallen television set. in houston three children are dead after a tragic fire at a home day care center. there were seven children inside the home, all between the ages of 18 months and 3 years. neighbors saw the smoke and tried to help. the owner of the day care center pulled out two of the children herself. the other four children remain hospitalized. citgo petroleum has just been fined $300,000 for an explosion at a texas refinery nearly two years ago. as abc's brian ross has learned, dozens of aging refineries across the country use the same toxic chemical blamed for triggering that blast. now millions of us may be at risk. >> reporter: in corpus christi, texas, the warning sirens come at all times of the day and night for the nearby oil refineries. >> you never know when you go to bed if you're going to live through the night. >> reporter: few have forgotten what happened two years ago after an explosion at the citgo refinery when safety precautions failed to fully stop a release of a highly lethal chemical that is called hydrofluoric acid that just barely missed the neighborhood. scientists call it one of the world's most hazardous chemicals. >> you can't breathe. eventually you die from asphyxiation. >> reporter: as seen in this industry test film, a release of the chemical in liquid form doesn't fall to the ground but floats across the desert in a kind of death cloud. >> it's really nasty stuff. >> reporter: an abc news investigation with the center for public integrity found 50 oil refineries from houston to minneapolis to los angeles to philadelphia that use hydrofluoric acid, putting some 16 million unsuspecting americans at serious risk. >> worst case scenario is a major accident in a highly populated area. and thousands of people are impacted. >> reporter: that hasn't happened but in the last two years there have been 29 fires and explosions at refineries using hydrofluoric acid, which is key to making gasoline cleaner and more efficient. >> i think our safety record can be improved but it's not -- it's not a bad safety record. >> reporter: but our investigation found a crisis brewing, with aging equipment and a poor record of maintenance. after an accident involving the chemical at this sunoco refinery in philadelphia. investigators found the company failed to correct an established history of tube leaks dating back to 1973. just this week, texas fined citco $300,000 for safety violations at that refinery that ld to that last accident. now officials of the united steel workers association, whose members work at many of those refineries are calling to congress to ban the use of that chemical. brian ross, abc news, new york. >> scary story for millions. in other news, toyota issued yet another huge recall due to a familiar problem, the automaker is now recalling more than 2 million more vehicles, all suvs. their pedals could get caught in floor mats or carpeting. toyota has now recalled 14 million vehicles worldwide in the past two years. there has been another casino robbery in las vegas. police say a man walked into the rio, grabbed about $32,000 in chips and then pulled a gun when a dealer tried to stop him. he made his escape, get this, in a taxi. the rio is where the annual world series of poker is played. most of the loot was $1,000 chips which are common and very tough to track. now to a story that has been all the buzz this week, about a campus full of geeks. university basketball team not known for actually winning any games. david wright reports on what ended a very long trend at cal tech. >> reporter: one of the longest losing streaks in college sports history came to an end in a game-clinching free throw with seconds on the clock. cal tech's first league win since 1985. right after "revenge of the nerds" came out. what did you get on libya's violent crackdown on antigovernment protesters and moammar gadhafi's angry speech declaring he would die a martyr before leaving the country sent searches soaring. people wanted to make sure they understood what gadhafi was saying. we saw a major spike in lookups for the word "martyr." as for the term force majeure which is french for "a greater force." libya declared that on its oil contracts this week in the wake of the uprising. another story that has seen steady interest is the new zealand earthquake and the desperate rescue and recovery efforts there. yahoo! users wanted to know where to find new zealand on a map. searches spiked more than 1,100%. and closer to home in hollywood, as oscar preps ramp up, so are the queries. the leading lady getting the most buzz on yahoo! at the moment is not in the running for best actress this year. it's anne hathaway who will be co-hosting the academy awards with actor james franco. she's getting more searches than all of the best actress nominees combined. and despite the youthful hosts, the oscars seem to be skewing a more mature audience. 16% of searches are coming from people under age 24. and finally, the royal wedding isn't the only marriage generating attention online as spring and summer brides count down to their big days, they are in major planning mode. we're getting a taste of what trends may walk down the aisle. searches for black wedding dress, yes, black, are up 95% this month. ladies are also looking for vintage wedding dress patterns, used wedding dresses and country wedding dresses. if you really conduct and condition, cbs and warner brothers television have decided to discontinue production of "two and a half men" for the remainder of the season. the story does not stop there. then charlie sheen writes an open letter to address the ending of the season. and he says, i fire back once and this contaminated little maggot can't handle my power and can't handle the truth. i urge all my beautiful and loyal fans who embrace the show for almost a decade to walk with me side by side as we march up the steps of justice to right this unconscionable wrong. when charlie sheen became ghandi, i don't remember, but that's what he said firing back at producers of the show. a hot mess.
