championship, but the celebrating turns silent with dozens of arrests on campus. "today," tuesday, april 8th, 2014. and good morning. welcome to "today." it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on a tuesday. we had to stay up late to watch the game. folks watching right now had it easy. it was over by 9:00-ish, i guess. >> did you watch it? >> heck no! >> the dogs versus the cats and in the end, the dogs of uconn win the ncaa championship. great game. they were underdogs all throughout the last couple of weeks and they just marched into march madness. this sets up a great night tonight. the lady huskies take on notre dame. two undefeated teams. if they win, it becomes title town. >> in a big way. we want to get to today's top story. the most anticipated moment of the oscar pistorius murder trial. telling the court today what led up to the shooting of reeva steenkamp. "today" correspondent jeff rozzen is in pretoria. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we've said all along this entire case comes down to oscar pistorius explaining that moment when he fired the four shots. he did that this morning in an emotional way. let me take you through that night according to oscar pistorius, then you'll hear from pistorius himself. they had dinner at 7:00 p.m., he did with reeva steenkamp his girlfriend. they went to the bedroom shortly after 8:00 p.m. she was doing yoga, he was talking to his cousin on the phone. around 9:00 p.m. he got tired, wanted to go to sleep. put his head down on the bed on reeva's stomach to rest. and he said to reeva, i'm going to bed. lock up the doors. middle of the night he says he hears the bathroom window slide open and thought it was an intruder. oscar pistorius in his own words takes it from there. >> i wasn't sure if somebody was going to come out of the toilet to attack me. i wasn't sure if someone was going to come up the ladder and point a firearm in my house and start shooting. and then i heard a noise from inside the toilet, what i perceived to be somebody coming out of the toilet. before i knew it, i'd fired four shots at the door. my ears were ringing. i couldn't hear anything. so i shouted, i kept on shouting for reeva to phone the police. >> reporter: there were several times where oscar pistorius broke down on the stand. after that moment you saw he talked about the time he realized it was reeva, broke the door down into the toilet and saw her there and was kneeling over her body. he said she wasn't breathing. he began sobbing so much they had to adjourn court early today just so he can calm down. he's back on the stand tomorrow morning. he will face many legal experts, a difficult examination that could begin as early as tomorrow afternoon. >> thank you. we're going to look into that, breakdown this morning's testimony in the next half hour. and al is covering tough weather for our friends from mississippi to the carolinas. >> we started talking about this yesterday that we were going to be looking at severe weather throughout the south on into the southeast and unfortunately at least eight tornadoes being reported. let's go to the radar. this is from yesterday. you can see these storms firing up. so much damage and they're still cleaning up late this morning into the afternoon. >> reporter: a dangerous tornado tore through two carolina counties late monday causing major damage and injuring up to 13 people. this morning residents of rural mississippi are assessing the damage caused by an ef-2 tornado there. the twister destroying nearly 30 homes and damaging dozens more. >> right on top of this car. >> reporter: authorities say nine people were injured. in other parts of the south, torrential rains were the problem causing surging water and flash floods. a woman in georgia died after her car veered off the road into a swollen creek and was swept downstream. >> the vehicle was found by our swift water team a little bit further down the river. and it was in the area where there was a lot of debris. >> reporter: and the body of a 9-year-old girl swept away by flood waters was recovered in mississippi. residents in jackson are outraged that authorities didn't move more quickly to close off streets after the city was deluged by flood waters more than a foot deep in some places. the nightmare forcing many motorists to abandon their cars while others were left stranded and had to be rescued from flooded streets. coming up we'll look at the west coast weather. a lot of warm air making its way into the west coast. >> i like hearing that. thank you. there's new developments in the hunt for malaysia flight 370 and the tantalizing pings that search teams heard from the targeted search zone. tom costello has covered this mystery from the very beginning. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hi. good morning. this is the area that they're searching right here. it is along these two arcs that engineers have identified as a likely flight path. this is what they're listening for. [ pinging ] those pings that should be coming from the black boxes. they didn't hear anything today. that could be because the boxes are -- the batteries are dying or perhaps the signal is getting distorted in the water. but they need to hone in on the signal before they can drop the unmanned submarine. 32 days since flight 370 disappeared and search teams are now working their most promising lead yet. those pings picked up by ocean shield which sound very much like the pings black boxes emit when they're submerged in water. >> we have a positive lead. this is a herculean task. the water is extremely deep. >> reporter: while the pinger batteries are supposed to last 30 days, the manufacturer says they could go longer. >> they do vary. 30 days is the minimum. they can operate as much as 45 days. >> reporter: now ocean shield is towing a u.s. pinger locater and methodically traversing an area three miles by three miles listening for the pings. each sweep takes eight hours. complicating matters, the indian ocean in that area is two to three miles deep. if they can't trianulate the ping, they will drop the bluefin. >> with the device we've got, that will take a long, long time. >> reporter: if search teams spot the wreckage, they will deploy a robot to retrieve the black boxes much as they did with air france 447. crucially the data recorder holds more than a thousand measurements of the last 25 hours. even if it sits in salt water for years. the data should survive. >> we still should be able to build the information back. so you won't lose the entire one last hour of the flight or all of the air speed data. >> reporter: all of it critical to piecing together what happened to flight 370, but first they have to find the wreckage. complicating matters, they still haven't found a single piece of wreckage anywhere floating on the ocean surface. that may be because it's drifted hundreds of miles or because of the typhoon that came in and pushed it all away. assuming a best-case scenario, assuming they hear the pingers again and they drop down the submersible and they start taking photographs of the wreckage, the fastest that they could get that underwater vehicle in to remove the black boxes, we're talking at least a month. back to you. >> tom, thank you very much. let's go to dr. ellen pregger. we need an education this morning, for sure. so we didn't hear anything today from what might have been the black boxes. what does that tell you? i mean, is that a fairly discouraging sign? >> well, there could be a number of reasons why that is. one, relocating that spot is not easy. so can you find the spot again is one thing. you're looking in a hostile environment, very deep. there's also the question of the battery. so it's discouraging, but it's not. honestly, finding those pings so quickly was shocking. for somebody like me that understands how vast the ocean is, how deep, and how difficult it is, i was really surprised. >> perhaps a stroke of luck. and when you think about them hearing that pinging sound for about two hours and then on the back check for about 15 minutes, that's a good sign. are there other things in the ocean that could make a sound that would be like that though? >> well, there are things that could make chirps or clicks, but not a regular beat like that. i think that's the key. is that when you hear that regular frequency, that ping, the chirp over and over, that's what they were looking for. and over that length of time. so let's say you heard a dolphin, you wouldn't hear it making a regular song over two hours. >> so let's say they are able to triangulate. that's when they would send this unmanned vehicle down to map the ocean floor. but when it's that deep, how difficult is that? and what's the terrain like there? >> well, the terrain looking at it a little bit, it's a little bit rough. south there's a deep trench which is a little bit scary, so what they'll do with the auv is program it on the ship where to go. and they'll fly underwater and they'll map swath using sonar. they use sound. what happens is the echo from the sound, if something is sticking up, it will give you a strong signal. so it will be light colors. if something is behind that, it would be a weak signal and dark. and use those echoes to create a map. but it's a very slow process. so they have to fly the auv, bring it back to the ship, download the data, and process it all. so we're talking weeks to months. especially without the ping. >> yeah. dr. ellen pregger, thank you very much. appreciate it. meantime let's go to natalie. she's got the top stories. >> good morning. good morning, everyone. a huge congratulations again to the uconn huskies. they capped off what many thought was an improbable run by winning college basketball's national championship monday night. the number seven seed was not favored to win the title when the tournament began late last month. but uconn beat kentucky 60-54 to take home the trophy for the second time in four years. as you might expect, things got a little rowdy on campus after the game. police arrested more than 12 people and there were some property damage reports. and by the way, the uconn women will have a chance tonight to make it 2 for 2 when they take on notre dame for their championship game. again, that game is tonight. a louisiana congressman is apologizing after a local newspaper published video of him kissing a woman who isn't his wife. representative vance mcallister issued a statement monday saying he has fallen short and seeks forgiveness. the rashida citizen reports that the woman in the video is a senior staffer. he stirred up controversy earlier this year when he invited "duck dynasty" star to the state of the union address. the lapd says a gunman with an unspecified complaint walked into the station's lobby and opened fire. the wounded officer was hit seven times but three of the bullets were stopped by his body armor. he and another officer returned fire wounding the gunman. and they were able to capture him. products were literally flying off the shelves in new york on monday. eight people were hurt when a packed shelving unit collapsed at a dollar store. the collapsing shelves created a cascadining effect. firefighters had to remove the goods by hand and cart them to the sidewalk. some victims suffered broken bones. none of the injuries are thought to be life threatening. and police in san francisco are looking to crack down on bad tippers. they say someone is going around tipping those tiny smart cars on all sides. while the images might be amusing, it is no laughing matter to the san francisco police. they're investigating the crimes as felony vandalism. wouldn't like it if you came to your car and it was like that. >> no. >> at least tip it back over. natalie, thank you. tip it right back. that's the polite thing to do. mr. roker. >> let's look at family's decision saying we prepared as well as any sailing crew could. adding to the scrutiny, a blog entry from charlotte kaufman talking about the medication she was taking days before they set
