Council removes Selma city manager; pays nearly $150K to part ways with Gallavan

SELMA — The city of Selma is looking for a new city manager. By a 3-2 vote, the Council voted to remove City Manager Teresa Gallavan. Another special meeting to review Gallavan was held on Friday night before the Monday meeting. New City Attorney Mary Lerner reported at the May 17 meeting that there was a motion by Councilman Bianca Mendoza-Navarro and a second by Mayor Pro Tem Beverly Cho to enter into a separation agreement with Gallavan with a five-month total of $148,656. Gallavan resigned her position, according to Lerner, and the city accepted the resignation. Council members John Trujillo and Mendoza-Navarro joined Cho in voting yes to remove Gallavan while Mayor Scott Robertson and Councilmember Sarah Guerra voted no.

City council terminates longtime attorney

At a special meeting of the City Council on Thursday, Jan. 14, Costanzo was removed from his post by a vote of 3-2.   Council member John Trujillo made the motion to terminate Costanzo with Mayor Pro Tempore Beverly Cho giving the second. Council member Bianca Mendoza-Navarro gave the other yes vote while Mayor Scott Robertson and Council member Sarah Guerra voted no.   The vote followed about 85 minutes of testimony from Costanzo and five citizens, including former council person Jim Avalos, who was mayor when Costanzo was terminated the first time about 31 months ago.     This decision left city officials scrambling to find an acting city attorney to be at the next council meeting on Jan. 19, moved up a night to avoid the Monday holiday of Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Raisin Capital of the World: Appreciating what we have around Christmas

I have had a wonderful week, as I have had the opportunity to do some COVID-19 distance shopping at some of our great Selma shops.  I was at K & E Ranch shopping for a special gift, a former student of mine came into the shop, and we had a great time of catching up and sharing about what we have been doing for the last 40-plus years.  What a great time when you meet individuals you taught, who were great students and know how successful they have been. It is these types of encounters that remind us how blessed we have been and how life has been full of experiences that changed our own lives as well as others.  There is much to be grateful for and be proud of, yet sometimes we just get muddled down with all the negative things around us in life we forget to celebrate the joys that come our way.
