Joanna Cherry campaigning with Nicola Sturgeon. THE SNP were wrong to sack Joanna Cherry from their Westminster frontbench, according to the party s former communications chief. Kevin Pringle said he didn t think it was right or credible for Cherry to have gone from hero to zero as he pointed to the praise she received both inside and outside the party for her successful work to stop Boris Johnson s prorogation of Parliament. Cherry s dismissal last Monday as justice and home affairs spokeswoman for the SNP in the Commons prompted a furious backlash with the row now entering its second week, and with MP Neale Hanvey sacked yesterday from his front bench role over a related internal dispute.
IAN Blackford has sacked Joanna Cherry, kicking her off the SNP’s Westminster front bench in an incendiary move that has sparked a huge row in the party. Cherry last night confirmed she had also contacted police over a “vicious threat” to her personal safety after her sacking was announced. Police Scotland said officers are investigating following a report of “threatening communications” made online. Blackford said his decision was part of a reshuffle to “draw on new talent”, but a source close to Cherry told The National there was “definitely tall thistle syndrome at play here”, saying the leadership was keen to cut the QC – often touted as a potential successor to Nicola Sturgeon – down to size.
