Averett University has recently received the First-gen Forward designation by the Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPAâStudent Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and The Suder Foundation, which recently announced the 2021-22 First-gen Forward cohort.
This designation recognizes institutions of higher education that have demonstrated a commitment to improving experiences and advancing outcomes of first-generation college students â students who are the first in their immediate family to attend college. Selected institutions receive professional development, community-building experiences and a first look at the Centerâs research and resources.Â
Almost half of Averettâs entering class are first-generation college attendees. Nearly 100 percent of Averett students qualify for some form of financial assistance, with 43 percent of the student body qualifying this year for Pell grants.Â

The Center for First-generation Student Success has selected Edmonds College as a member of the 2021-22 First-gen Forward cohort, in recognition of the college’s support of first-generation students. First-gen Forward is the nation’s first recognition program acknowledging higher education institutions for their commitments to first-generation student success.
