LAKE PLACID Members of the North Elba Town Council unanimously approved the hiring of Haley Breen as the town’s first-ever community development director on Tuesday evening, Feb. 9, during their monthly meeting. The next day, she was on the job. Breen was recommended by the Lake Placid/North Elba Community Development Commission’s ad hoc Development Director Group, consisting of Community Development Commission Chairman Dean Dietrich, town Councilor Emily Politi, Lake Placid village Mayor Craig Randall, village Trustee Art Devlin, Peter Roland and Kate Thompson. “She is a soon to be graduate of Cornell Institute for Public Affairs (CIPA) with a Master of Public Affairs and a concentration in environmental policy,” Politi wrote in an email Tuesday after the vote. “She starts tomorrow and one of her first tasks will be to write a press release announcing herself.”

SARANAC LAKE â The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee has released two different buttons for this yearâs Carnival, designed as always by Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau.
Using the Winter Carnivalâs designated theme âMask-eradeâ â although the button spells it the standard way, âMasqueradeâ â Trudeauâs illustrations show six Doonesbury characters, three on each button, wearing a variety of masks.
Mike Doonesburyâs mask features pine cones, BDâs has a skier, Boopsieâs has a bunny, Joanieâs has Hudson Bay blanket colors (green, red, yellow and indigo on a white background), Uncle Dukeâs has a hole for his cigarette holder, and Zonker wears a snowflake mask over his eyes.

Gloria Burnet Fletcher, 88, passed away on Dec. 27, 2020, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. Born on June 10, 1932, in Tupper Lake, she was the youngest daughter of the late Liva (Payment) and Fred Burnet. Gloria married Douglas Fletcher on Sept. 11, 1950. They enjoyed 65 years together before his passing in 2015. Together they enjoyed horseback riding, traveling on vacations and watching their grandchildren play at various sporting events and attending their concerts. Gloria was an active 4-H Leader, teaching girls in Lake Clear and Tupper Lake skills of sewing and knitting. She enjoyed cross-country skiing with family and friends. Later they moved to Potsdam, where family remained very important to her as she hosted countless family holidays and get-togethers. She was often the last one to leave the table, as she was too busy talking about her grandchildren’s latest accomplishments including how she saw her great-grandchildren singing songs on the iPad.
Dec 30, 2020 Lenore (Newell) Leavitt, age 100, of Gabriels, died December 27, 2020, at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid. Lenore was a lifelong resident of the area, born in Saranac Lake on May 5, 1920, and growing up in Keeses Mills with her parents, Harold and Pauline (Campbell) Newell and four younger brothers. Lenore married William Leavitt on Saturday, June 26, 1943, at the Keeses Mills Presbyterian Church. Upon marrying Bill she moved to the Leavitt Farm in Gabriels, where she lived until moving to Saranac Village at Will Rogers in 2015. In 1943, she joined the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake where she was an active member until her death. On May 5, 2020, the wonderful staff and leadership at Will Rogers helped her celebrate her 100th birthday, a goal and highlight of her life.
