Shambhu Dayal Meena, chairperson, Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission, chairing a public hearing in Mangaluru on Friday. However, the KERC decided to conduct an independent study through a consultant to decide about Mescom’s demand. At a public hearing held by KERC at the deputy commissioner’s office in Mangaluru on Friday, the Mescom officials said the company will have to hike tariff by Rs 1.67 per unit to plug the revenue gap of Rs 943 crore projected for the year 2021-22. The company has presented before the commission that the steep increase in power purchase cost has forced it to propose a hike in tariff. However, the majority of organizations, including Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and consumers objected to the company’s demand. Mescom has a 24.88 lakh consumer base in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru and it expects to sell 5,658 million units of power in 2021-22.
