Ready Set Learn to open new preschool at former American Legion post in Pittsfield

Children enjoy a lunch break recently at Ready Set Learn Preschool on Dalton Avenue in Pittsfield. The center will open another location in the fall, at the former American Legion site on Wendell Avenue.photos by BEN GARVER — THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE PITTSFIELD — When Melissa Fawcett and her husband were looking for options for their young son, the child care programs they found kept coming up short. So, the Fawcetts set out to make the program they were dreaming of: an all-day child care facility equally focused on fun and learning and with the kind of structured instruction meant to prepare kiddos for kindergarten. The end result was Ready Set Learn Preschool.

Pittsfield entrepreneur, 8, directs profits to help homeless

At 8, Hadley Light already has made her mark. “She’s always had this entrepreneurial mindset,” said Lenny Light, Hadley’s father. Her latest venture might be successful, Light said, but more impressive is her desire to give back to the community. On Tuesday, the third grader at Williams Elementary School donated the $1,900 she has earned so far from her apparel company, Waves, to the Christian Center on Robbins Avenue to help the nonprofit fight homelessness. Light, who turns 9 on April 4, wants to ensure that the homeless “can have homes like me, and food, and that they can have protection. “Sometimes when I think about homeless people I feel bad for them,” Hadley said. “So, I wanted to make up a company.”
