Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks grew up in Oldstead, on the southwestern corner of the North York Moors National Park, where his flagship restaurant, the Black Swan, is situated.
The area is firmly farming country, Banks explains, with access to phenomenal produce from meat and cheese and game from the local moors. “Every village has a pub, sometimes even three, and they’re all charming,” says Banks.

There were just three two-star Michelin awards and two-three stars, but 17 restaurants were awarded one star while 16 were given Bib Gourmand recognition. With its Bib Gourmand status, Michelin is championing value-for-money restaurants, offering good food at competitive prices. This year also saw The Michelin Green Star for Sustainability making its debut, with 23 restaurants receiving the award.
