Tennessee schools close ahead of winter break as COVID-19 surges

Nashville Tennessean Many Tennessee students are finishing the fall semester at home as schools close their doors as the coronavirus surges across the state. Students who attend Tennessee s largest school districts Shelby County Schools, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Knox County Schools and Hamilton County Schools are all learning virtually or remotely at home in the final weeks of the fall semester. And many don t know when they might return to school in-person or if they will at all. These school closings come as many argue that in-person learning doesn t contribute to the widespread transmission of the coronavirus and call for schools to remain open. But the closures also illustrate the challenges districts face as the virus spreads unchallenged in the community.
