Westcott Space Cluster to support satellite propulsion testing
The Westcott Space Cluster in Aylesbury is to get a satellite propulsion test facility, the Science Minister Amanda Solloway has announced.
The new centre is intended to enable companies and academics to test space propulsion engines at up to 1.5kN in high-altitude vacuum, an equivalent test altitude of 140,000ft, said the government.
It will allow new types of more sustainable propellants to be tested, such as Hydrogen Peroxide and Liquid Oxygen.
The UK space sector is already a leader in satellite propulsion and, with a growing space manufacturing sector and plans for UK spaceports, the satellite propulsion field is set to grow substantially in the coming years.
UK government backs 3D mapping Comet Interceptor probe
Thales Alenia Space have won the contract to design the mother ship for the Comet Interceptor mission, which will see one main spacecraft and two smaller robotic probes travel to an as-yet unidentified comet, and map it in three dimensions.
The smaller probes (30cm in length) will be built by the Japanese Space Agency.
For the mission, once in space, Comet Interceptor will wait in a parking orbit until a suitable target has been spotted by astronomers. As its name suggests, the Comet Interceptor will then set out on an intercept course. It is envisaged that it will deploy the two smaller probes, which will make close passes of the comet’s nucleus and beam their data back to the main craft.
