The United States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has announced a new program that would allow concrete measurement of progress toward building usable quantum computers. In an April 2 press release DARPA noted that its new “Quantum Benchmarking” program would “re-invent key quantum computing metrics, make those metrics testable, and estimate the required quantum and classical resources needed to reach critical performance thresholds.”
Explaining the significance of the new program, Joe Altepeter, program manager in DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office, was quoted as saying in the news release, “Building a useful quantum computer is really hard, and it’s important to make sure we’re using the right metrics to guide our progress towards that goal.
