IBCâs Vision to Vitality panel discussion focuses on population, workforce issues
BY MICHAEL CRUMB, Senior Staff Writer Friday, April 30, 2021 10:32 AM Iowa doesn’t have enough workers to fill open positions that are needed across all industries. That was one of the primary messages shared during the Iowa Business Council’s Vision to Vitality panel discussion Wednesday.
The hourlong conversation, held virtually, was hosted by Joe Murphy, the Iowa Business Council’s executive director. It featured Mike Tousley, executive vice president and general manager of the Weitz Co., Clive Mayor Scott Cirksena, Clive Behavioral Health CEO Mary Sparks Thompson, and Mark VanderLinden, chief financial officer for Clive Behavioral Health, as panelists.
Feb. 1 should have been the day Rob Newberry died.
It happened within minutes: Newberry, participating in the same team training class at Genesis Health Clubs in Clive he s attended for the last three years, was talking to his trainer about how to improve his mile time on the treadmill.
Then his wife, Dawn, watched him collapse.
At that point, Clive Fire Chief Rick Roe said, Newberry became one of 350,000 a year who suffer sudden cardiac arrest. For some reason, his heart just stops beating, and he’s laying here, Roe said. He has less than a 10% chance of survival at that point.
