the city council to consider. to offer them a chance to restart their lives here in a welcoming community, no charge to the federal government. no charge to the city of berkeley. reporter: berkeley city council members weren t able to comment on the proposal but the city manager is urging the council to take no action, stating federal law currently prohibits the transfer of guantanamo detainees to the u.s. but the proposal is stirring up plenty of debate among residents. we ve been illegally detaining the people for far too long. president obama has failed on the promise to close guantanamo and so anything we can do to help give these people some sort of humanity they deserve i think is good. people let out of guantanamo, quite a few of them, have rejoined terrorist activities. those who have been cleared. i don t think i would like them to be here. reporter: marin says they would be carefully screened before being invited. she said many have remarkable backgrounds
left but at the height of this meeting more than 450 people were gathered here. now right now they are mauling over the four different options. just minutes ago we learned that option number three has been removed. right now they re discussing closing homebrook elementary and homebrook middle school. most folks know schools will be closed here, the question which ones. there s several different options but no one likes any of them. from rallies to bake sales to t- shirt campaigns it has been a long night to keep schools over in the mount diablo school district, and tonight the final push. we understand your position, needing to con consolidate schools to save money. but ours is not the one to close. it s the one to use as a model. reporter: to students making their final plea. by closing down harbor you are taking away kids chances to get a good education. reporter: silverwood elementary, secoia elementary are also considering foreclosure. the combination of declining
