Fairfield City Council Meeting The Fairfield City Council met in regular session last night with all members present. The council unanimously voted to repeal a recently approved ordinance regarding the setback requirements for fences in Fairfield, however, due to miscommunication, the ordinance changed not only fences, but structures as well, resulting in the need for the repeal of the ordinance. A sperate ordinance was then passed regulating the setback for fences, which was changed from 7' to 2'. The council then unanimously passed an ordinance that permits Fairfield city employees to bid on and purchase city equipment that would have normally been scrapped. 2 pieces of equipment that were recently destined for salvage were instead sold. A 2002 Ford F150 pickup was sold for $400 while an Exmark mower was sold for $451. The council approved the ordinance permitting portable cargo containers to be placed in Fairfield. Alderman Eugene McGill voted no. The city council approved a substantial raise in building & construction permit fees. Currently, all permits are $10. Under the new ordinance fees will increase according to the scope of the project. The purchase of a new trailer for the Gas Dept. was approved. The cost will be $9,313 and was included in the departments 2022 budget. The sale of a Ditch Witch and trailer currently at the Gas Dept. will be sold by bid, with a minimum bid of $5,600. Bid information may be obtained at City Hall. Finally, Christmas bonuses for City Employees were approved. Each full-time employee will receive $200 plus $5 for each year of service. Part time employees will receive $150. In miscellaneous items: Mayor Moore announced that the purchaser of the old power plant building had failed to live up to the purchase agreement so the sale has been cancelled. The mayor stated the council will revisit the issue at a future meeting. The council extended its thanks to all involved in the City Trunk or Treat that was held on Halloween. The event was a huge success. Democrat Alexi Giannoulias claimed victory after Dan Brady conceded the race. ### Illinois Supreme Court Democrats retained their control of the Illinois Supreme Court , having won the 2nd District seat and as of 11:30 p.m., were poised to win the 3rd District seat as well, which would expand their court majority to 5-2. ### Democrat Tammy Duckworth Wins Re-Election Democrat Tammy Duckworth has won reelection to the U.S. Senate from Illinois against political newcomer and lawyer Kathy Salvi. The race was called just two minutes after the polls closed, beating Duckworth's record from six years ago, when her victory over Mark Kirk was called four minutes after polls closed. ### Pritzker Re-Elected Governor Illinois Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker was reelected Tuesday beating his Republican challenger state Sen. Darren Bailey. With 70% of precincts counted, Pritzker had 54.6% of the vote, compared to 42.1% for Bailey and 3.3% for Libertarian candidate Scott Schluter, solidifying a second, four-year term for the incumbent. Speaking at the Marriott Hotel in Chicago, Pritzker vowed to not let his supporters down and strove to be a "happy warrior." "Facing this moment means fighting these battles together," he said. "Together, we must be bold and not shy away from our big "D" Democratic and little "d" democratic values...Today, we reaffirm what we are fighting for." At his campaign event at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield, Bailey told his supporters just after 9:45 p.m. that he had called the governor to congratulate him on his victory. While he will not be getting the keys to governor's mansion, he vowed to continue the fight. ### River Stages River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 5.87 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.06 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 5.09 (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 1.68 feet. The Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 3.75 feet, and the Wabash River at Mt.
