LEWISTON The L&A Veterans Council will honor Gold Star families at the Memorial Day ceremony Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park starting at 10 a.m.
The Gold Star Families monument will be unveiled.
A Gold Star Family is one that has had a family member in the military who died in the line of duty. It is meant to honor the service member’s ultimate sacrifice while acknowledging their family’s loss, grief and continued healing, according to the United Service Organizations.
The monument will honor the memory of the those who died and create a lasting memorial for future families.

Rachel Steichen admits she was kicking herself.
The White Lake mother was wondering about her son, Orion, and his speech pattern. For a 4-year-old, his speech has developed well for his age. But he speaks quickly.
“We have been questioning his speech for a long time and we’ve always thought we should wait and see,” she said. “And I feel that the sooner you can get at the problem, the better. And he’s to the point where now, when people can’t understand him, he gets frustrated.”

Twenty stained glass windows continue to complicate the redevelopment of the former Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center.
No one seems to believe they are of high quality or essential to the building’s historic integrity, but the city’s historic preservation ordinance calls for their preservation in some form. Unfortunately, few seem to want to take them.
A 2017 plan to turn the historically-protected, three-story building into a hotel, with a 14-story addition, was approved with the caveat that three of the stained glass windows remain in place and the other 17 be displayed in the hotel’s common areas. That plan never advanced to construction, but Ascendant Holdings acquired the property, 790
