Vendée Globe Day 73 morning update: Fast and low or high and slower?

Bureau Vallée - Vendée Globe © Stéphane Maillard / Bureau Vallée After more than 25,000 miles of racing this Vendée Globe hangs in the balance. Who will win? At the head of the fleet now Charlie Dalin (Apivia) has been in first place 178 times since November 8th when the race started, Louis Burton (Bureau Vallée 2) has been in first twice, and one of those times was on start day after he jumped the start gun! Dalin is racing harder on the wind, on a tighter angle as his port side foil is compromised but trying to be closer to the Azores, to the east, when he hooks into the low pressure which will accelerate him to the finish. Burton has the bow of Bureau Vallée down, powering on a more westerly slant at 17kts trying to go faster to reach the low earlier but more to the west. This climb up the NE ly trades blowing at 16-18kts will take another three days.

Burton goes faster and further but Dalin gains in long-range Vendee duel

Burton goes faster and further but Dalin gains in long-range Vendee duel Issued on: 3 min Paris (AFP) Charlie Dalin and Louis Burton continued to duel at long distance in the Vendee Globe on Tuesday after choosing different routes home. Burton in Bureau Vallee 2 was moving faster and was further north than any of his rivals but because he had gambled on swinging west in search of favourable weather, he had dropped two places to fourth and was further from home than fellow Frenchmen Dalin in Apivia, Thomas Ruyant in LinkedOut and Damien Seguin in Apicil. At 1700 GMT Dalin led Ruyant by 116 nautical miles (215.4 kilometres), with Seguin less than 3nm further back and Burton another 12nm from the finish as they drew level with the Cape Verde Islands.

Bureau Vallée - Vendée Globe © Vincent Olivaud It seems to be Louis Burton on Bureau Vallée who has finally escaped from the Doldrums first. He has been making a consistent 17kts early this morning in the 16-18kts NE ly trade winds which seem to be well established. With the exception of Charlie Dalin who is 115 nautical miles to his SE, the pack is well dispersed and mostly still struggling with an ICTZ which is proving much more active and sticky than was expected. At this stage northing - that is latitude the north - is everything and Burton has emerged to be at 6 degrees 30 North on Monday at 0400hrs UTC while the nominal rankings leader Charlie Dalin (Apivia) was still struggling in a fickle breeze at 5 degrees 50 North. Behind and to the east the main group is really struggling at between two and seven knots while Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut) and Boris Herrmann (Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco) are further north than them and, closer to 34 degrees West wh
