Oregon electors seek to abolish Electoral College

Oregon electors take stance against Electoral College Three of Oregon s electors wore face masks that said Abolish the Electoral College to cast their ballots in the 2020 election. Author: Hanna Merzbach Updated: 4:59 PM PST December 15, 2020 PORTLAND, Ore On Monday, Oregon’s seven members of the Electoral College gathered in the state capitol to cast their votes for Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Biden won 56% of votes in the state, so Oregon Democrats chose their slate of electors: the chair and vice chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, along with the chairs of each congressional district. Yet, despite their positions, not all of the electors support the Electoral College. Three of them even wore face masks saying, “Abolish the Electoral College.”

Oregon officially casts electoral votes for Biden and Harris

Oregon took its part Monday in the every-four-year ritual of casting the state’s electoral votes for president and vice president. Like most states, there were no surprises as the seven people chosen as electors — all state Democratic Party officials — voted for Democrat Joe Biden as president and Democrat Kamala Harris as vice president. The 12th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution requires separate votes for the offices. They did so at a meeting that lasted less than 30 minutes in the Senate chamber at the Capitol in Salem. It might have been just like any other meeting following the presidential election. But because of the coronavirus pandemic, the seven electors sat far apart at individual senators’ desks — not at a common table — and they and the other officials present wore face masks.

Oregon Secretary of State Bev Clarno, a Republican from Redmond, said before the vote that it came amid an “incredibly difficult” year, citing the coronavirus pandemic, catastrophic wildfires and racial injustice. “All of this on top of the 2020 general election that was rife with misinformation, leading to mistrust in our democracy and division among our citizens,” Clarno said from the podium. She did not name Trump, who critics say has undermined public faith in America’s democracy by claiming, without any basis, that the election was rigged.
