Three years ago, the Connecticut was prowling the depths of that sea, operating very near to the advanced Chinese naval submarine base on Hainan Island. Then, tragedy struck. 

Although a new Virginia-class Block V variant could feature more advanced seabed capabilities, the USS Jimmy Carter’s unique operations over the years should not be discounted.

All three Seawolf-class boats carry a crew complement of 140 (14 commissioned officers and 126 enlisted sailors) and boast a maximum speed of 35 knots, with a silent speed of 20 knots.

The USS Jimmy Carter even received a Presidential Unit Citation – but the specifics of the citation, which was awarded after completing the mysteriously named “Mission 7,” remain unclear.

The Seawolf-class was built to defeat the Soviet Navy if World War III ever started. However, once the Soviet Navy was no more, the Seawolf had a problem. 

The three remaining Seawolf-class boats were ahead of their time and positively influenced the advent of the Virginia-class fast-attack boats – subs that will remain in service for decades.

Larger and more advanced than the other two Seawolf boats that were developed in the 1980s, USS Jimmy Carter has likely been tasked with some of the US Navy's most secretive missions. 

While the USS Connecticut collision was preventable, the Navy has doubled down on improved training and certification to help prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.

The battered Seawolf class submarine that hit a seamount will not be repaired till sometime in 2026 at the earliest.
