The assessments of Putin's power after the death of Prigozhin are strong on wishful thinking

A long list of Russian politicians, journalists, human rights activists and prominent businessmen have died — or narrowly escaped death — after crossing President Vladimir Putin.

Early U.S. intelligence assessments suggest that an intentional explosion led to the plane crash that apparently killed Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, Western officials said Thursday, amid widespread suspicion that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the assassination of another one of his rivals.

A plane crash which killed all 10 people on board is widely seen as an act of revenge after a short-lived rebellion that Vladimir Putin branded a "stab in the back".

General Sergei Surovikin has not been seen in public since the failed Wagner rebellion. In July, a Russian official said he was “resting” and “not available.”

After disappearing from public view, Sergei Surovikin's fate is now clear. The Russian army commander in Ukraine's career is over, for now at least. Proximity to Wagner rebel Prigozhin seems to have done the trick.
