Delhi Chalo: Several farmers tried to enter Delhi by breaking barricades at Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border on Tuesday. Police have used tear gas to disperse the protesters. Meanwhile, several protesters were also detained by the cops.

Justice Jay Sengupta set aside the promulgation of Section 144 of CrPC by the district administration at Sandeshkhali in West Bengals North 24 Parganas, holding that the manner in which it was done was not right.

Justice Joy Sengupta of Calcutta High Court today rejected the imposition of Section 144 in the entire Sandeshkhali. However, the court observed state has liberty to impose Section 144 in certain pockets after judicial review, people in the know said. Sandeshkhali has witnessed violent protests by women in the last one week and over allegations of atrocities on women and land grabbing by miscreants close to absconding Trinamool leader Shahjahan Sheikh.

Ahead of the Delhi Chalo Farmers March from Haryana, Section 144 has been imposed in Panchkula. Demonstrations and march pasts have also been banned.

After the farmers’ organizations announced their march to Delhi on 13 February, the security has been tightened in the Punjab-Haryana border areas to stop them from reaching the national capital.
