this weekend as well. and salon.com s joan walsh. thank you, both for being here. good being with you, rev. congressman, a lot of your republican colleagues who went to selma with all of us don t want to work on voting rights. how do you explain that? well, look reverend al what i m hoping takes place here and i agree with what senator coons just said is that i was talking to a number of my republican i m glad they came number one. but there was a number of them who were relatively young. so i m hoping that they really had not studied and understood the real meaning of what the voting rights act stood for and why it is intricately important for them to work on it. when i go back to washington d.c., i m going to talk to them and say, look this is an american issue that s not just for black folk but it s for all americans and if we re going to talk around the world about a democracy, then we ve got to make sure that democracy happens right here in the united states.
give them the equipment they need so they can defend themselves. everybody talks about boots on the ground. they are our boots on the ground for crying out loud, and why don t we give them what they need to protect themselves. they don t have hospitals or just the simple things mechanics to repair broken action sell. there was a recent article. i am not starting a private army. someone kind of exaggerated my intentions over there. i think i said that. i think i said you were patton. oh. well, indian jones might be another name. let me ask you. i want to be clear on something. you were at an event with governor scott walker and rick santorum, and i wondered if you were hedging your bets there that you might jump from rick to the governor. what do how say? i d say that s a premature question. rick is still very viable, and i think he is considered one of
there the message across now needs to be told stay out of it. stay away. that s the message that these leaders should be bringing to the minorities, to the african-american communities or whoever that has a problem with the department of justice or the criminal justice system. stay out of it. you understand? if you don t like it, stay away from it there are more black males in the prison system than children at disneyland. why is that? you understand? don t complain about it but yet you guys are eager to go by the crimes your committing. that s the message that needs to be taught right now and brought to the nation, from all across the communities. to understand there are issues with the police department. i understand there is. however yet you cannot commit crimes and do what you do, resist arrest and expect that you re not going to get disciplined for it. what do you think young african-americans, though, who hear the president, hear this more than they ll hear you even
sergeant, the one development i worry the most about this week in these reports of 40 americans who made their way back here after hooking up with isis over there. i don t nope what went wrong but i know that 40 of them back in this country, and many of them we can t trace their whereabouts that s a big and immediate domestic concern. what do you say? it certainly and is not just to the 40 that have the been repatriated to the united states now but it s the lack of u.s. policy and presence taking the global leadership role. the broader vision for america we should be forward on this. instead we re waiting for allies, the gulf state countries to take the lead. jordan great to see them onboard but if the u.s. does not have a hardened policy against isis, they re recruit only big ideas. with woe don t compete with that with our larger ideas and have an ambiguous policy of leaving service members in harm s way, we can expect to deal with this problem for a long time. the iranian influe
is the president selling selma? the notion that say some young kid brought here when they were two or three or four years old might somehow be deported at the age of 20 or 25 even though they have grown up as americans that s not who we are. that s not true to the spirit of what the march on selma was about. not what the march on selma was about. i know you and i are about the same age but we weren t much older than toddlers back them but i m sure we looked at the history since. selma was about legal americans denied their rights not illegal americans thinking they were entitled to their rights. don t use the blood of victims to score some political points
