Calculus proves too hot for Further And Beyond in Jamaica St Leger

Loop Sports - Updated Calculus (Shane Ellis) is clear of rivals approaching the finish of the Jamaica St Leger at Caymanas Park on Saturday, July 3, 2021. (PHOTO: caymanasracing). CALCULUS on Saturday outstayed former stablemate, FURTHER AND BEYOND,  scoring a near seven-length victory in the 10-furlong Jamaica St Leger to establish himself as a leading contender for August s Jamaica Derby at 12 furlongs. CALCULUS won at odds of 7-1 in a time of  2:08.1 with Shane Ellis a month after Trinidadian owner Chevan Maharaj moved the colt from Anthony Nunes to Gary Subratie, following down-the-track efforts  in the Kingston and 2000 Guineas. The change of barn did wonders for CALCULUS, who stalked the leaders from along the rail down the backstretch before pouncing on FURTHER AND BEYOND and 4-5 favourite, MINIATURE MAN, at the half-mile marker.

Calculus looks the best shot at Sir Howard Stakes

File photo Champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ CALCULUS reports off a 10-week break for Sunday’s six-furlong Sir Howard Stakes at Caymanas Park, but has looked in great shape at exercise, working alongside top-class stablemate, TOONA CILIATA. CALCULUS was two lengths adrift TOONA CILIATA’s 1:07.2 for five-and-a-half furlongs on Monday, the fastest at the distance that morning, a decent gallop for the colt which turned three the following day and hadn’t raced since finishing fifth behind stablemate FURTHER AND BEYOND in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes on December 27. Since scoring an impressive three-length win on debut late November, CALCULUS has kept rich company, returning mid-December to place third behind stablemates HOIST THE MAST and GO DEH GIRL in the six-furlong Dye Job Sprint.
