SLO County resident enlists in Army National Guard as infantryman

–San Luis Obispo County resident Trevor Butler, 23, on Feb. 19 enlisted in the California Army National Guard. Butler was born in Visalia, Calif., and was raised in Los Osos. He currently works in construction throughout SLO County. He is an avid runner and is looking forward to his military training, says recruiter Staff Sergeant Leo Castillo. “Trevor is looking forward to pushing himself to the limits mentally and physically as an 11 Bravo Infantryman and is proud to serve his country, state, and community,” Castillo says. “He has the support of his wonderful parents Jason Butler and Amanda Valena.” Butler will be doing his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Local resident Darren McKay enlists in California Army National Guard

–Paso Robles resident Darren McKay, 28, enlisted in the California Army National Guard on Feb 19. McKay was born in San Luis Obispo, raised in Paso Robles, and went to high school in Bakersfield. He has studied at Cuesta College and has worked in the local wine industry as an assistant winemaker with winemaker Jason Bushong. McKay has also worked as a medication technician. McKay will be attending Defense Language Institute in Monterey for a year after his completion of basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. “He is proudly supported in his decision to serve by his mother Kayla, his supportive siblings Fanisha, Shalin, Tierza, Katie, Emily, and Cameron,” says recruiter Staff Sergeant Leo Castillo. “His grandpa Larry is also very proud.”

Local Marine joins California Army National Guard

Garrett Tice –Templeton local Garrett Tice served for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and now is enlisting in the California Army National Guard. Tice signed up on Dec. 14. His military occupation specialty (MOS) will be 12B, a combat engineer. Combat engineers help soldiers navigate combat missions by constructing bridges, clearing barriers with explosives, and detecting and avoiding mines and other environmental hazards. Tice’s rank will be E4, which is a specialist. “Garrett has two supportive parents, David Tice & Peggy Tice, who couldn’t be prouder of their son for continuing to serve his country and be a major contributor to civil support efforts within the California Army National Guard,” says recruiter Staff Sergeant Leo Castillo.

Local soldier enlists in California Army National Guard

–Templeton resident Austyn Castro enlisted in the California Army National Guard on Dec. 14. Castro will be serving as a 15E. which is an unmanned aircraft systems repairer. This military occupational skill (MOS) is vital to reconnaissance and has played a major role in supporting Cal Fire during fire season. Castro previously served six years of active duty in the US Army and will retain his rank of sergeant. He currently works at Pellenc America in Paso Robles and is a mechanic by trade. He is married to his supportive wife Megan and they have two children who are happy to see their dad continue his patriotism and civil support, says recruiter Staff Sergeant Leo Castillo.
