KUCHING: With a nationwide Emergency in place until Aug 1, the Sarawak state election may be put off beyond its due date of Aug 5 but opinions differ on how to do so.
Under the state constitution, an election must be held within 60 days from the dissolution of the state legislative assembly.
As the state legislature’s current term ends on June 6, an election must be called by Aug 5 at the latest.
In case the Emergency is not lifted earlier to allow for state polls to be held by Aug 5, Sarawak deputy speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala said one option is for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to promulgate an ordinance under Article 150 (2B) of the Federal Constitution to extend the state assembly’s term beyond June 6.
