The Supreme Court of India has ruled that government authorities will have to pay compensation to the families of those who die while cleaning sewers. The court stated that the compensation will be Rs 30 lakh for deaths and Rs 20 lakh for permanent disabilities. The court also emphasized the need to completely eradicate manual scavenging and directed government agencies to coordinate to prevent such incidents.
The Court mandated at least ₹30 lakh as compensation for sewer deaths, at least ₹20 lakh for permanent disablement and at least ₹10 lakh for other disablement cases.
The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment was asked to place on record an affidavit containing information on questions raised by the Court.
