the longest tenured owners in the national basketball association. they bought the baltimore bullets in 1964. poland moved the team to washington, changed their name to the wizards and built an arena which helped to revitalize downtown d.c. we begin our reporting with dan hellie who is at the verizon center. dan? reporter: abe poland s body has been deteriorating for the last year or so. he had a rare illness. he was in a wheelchair, didn t make it to as many games as he would have liked, but he was sharp of the mind. when you talk with people here who worked with mr. poland for a long time, they say he was compassionate, caring, he was loyal, and boy, did he love the people who worked for him, especially the players. there are several guys who have been on this team for a number of years like gilbert arenas who were shocked and saddened to hear of abe poland s death. gilbert said he was like a second father and he will be missed. first person i called was my dad. he was
the consumer product safety commission is doing to ensure consumer safety? i m pat lawson muse. i m jim handly. we begin with breaking and sad news. wizards owner abe poland has died. emergency medical crews were called to his home this afternoon. dan hellie is following this breaking story this hour and is here with more on it. dan? hey, guys. the 85-year-old bought the wizards in 1964, 46 years ago. abe and irene poland, the longest tenured owners in the nba. they opened the capital center, landover, maryland, then applied for a national hockey league expansion franchise bringing that game to town. poland made his fortune in construction. he built the first apartment buildings in washington, d.c. the polands have given a lot back to the community other than sports over the years. wizards are at home tonight. i will have player reaction coming up later in the show. the latest thing he is responsible for is building the verizon center downtown that has turned into a
mr. poland gave generously to local charities and helped trigger the revitalization of gallery plays in the surrounding areas. lindsay czarniak joins us with more on what the city lost. absolutely. abe poland was intensely loyal to everybody he dealt with professionally. he has a tremendous reputation. he has been in frail health suffering from a rare brain disease for a while. his wife irene told me not too long ago his mind was sharp as a tack. about 1:00 emergency crews went to his house from a call that a man couldn t breathe. wizards organization announced his death late this afternoon. he was 85 years old suffering from that brain disorder that impairs movement and balance. four years ago he had a heart bypass surgery. last year poland attended the news conference when the wizards signed antawn jamison and gilbert arenas and said he would be around until the team won a championship. polelands bought the baltimore bullets in 1954. they are the longest tenured owners of
