24-year-old shoots 48-year-old man, takes own life Share Updated: 12:24 PM CDT Jun 9, 2021 The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating a murder-suicide caused by a family altercation that left two dead in Copiah County.At around 9:27 p.m. Tuesday, Copiah County deputies were dispatched to a home on Killingsworth Lane after receiving a call about shots fired in the area, according to Sheriff Byron Swilley. When deputies arrived on scene, they discovered Christopher Byther, 48, shot dead. Swilley said the suspect, Darren Virgil, 24, then shot himself in front of family members and deputies. He died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident is described as a “senseless crime” that stemmed from a family dispute, said Copiah County officials. Swilley said a deputy had to discharge his weapon during the incident, resulting in MBI’s assistance in the investigation.“Keep the family in your prayers. This was a senseless crime that occurred here,” Swilley said. “Put down the guns.”
