From 26 to 30 September 2022, a UN-SPIDER expert team visited the Philippines to support the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and other organizations in strengthening their work related to Disaster Risk Management and Emergency Response by effective use of space-based information. This Technical Advisory Mission (TAM) had been requested by the Philippines Space Agency (https://philsa.gov.ph/) in close collaboration with the members of the NDRRMC.
Nearly 750 participants representing international, regional, national, local organizations, and other stakeholders participated in the 3rd International Multi-Hazard Early Warning Conference, which was held in Bali, Indonesia, on 23 and 24 May 2022. The Conference was organized by the International Network on Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (IN-MHEWS) and other partners as a pre-event for the 2022 Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Dr. Farhan Asrar, a Mississsauga physician, was the project lead on a paper that showing how space technologies can further support controlling pandemics.
Introduction
Space-based applications related to Earth Observation and geospatial data play an important role in supporting disaster risk reduction, response, and recovery efforts through providing accurate and timely information for decision-makers. Monitoring floods, drought conditions and water resource environments using satellite remote sensing (RS) technologies have become more essential recently in particular for developing countries.
This Workshop will address the use of space technologies (remote sensing, telecommunication and global navigation satellite systems) for various applications in natural disaster managements that can provide sustainable social and economic benefits. Current and planned projects/researches that use space-based technologies for both practical applications and scientific explorations will be presented. Cooperative efforts and international partnerships for capacity-building, training and research will be discussed.
