Columbia businesses adjust for the summer

COLUMBIA - After a few busy weekends, Columbia businesses are preparing for the summer months. Businesses saw an increase in the amount of customers due to the return of in-person graduations over the last few weekends and the True/False Film Fest. In some cases, businesses even had to hire more workers. Tom Spurling, owner of Ernie s in downtown Columbia, saw his number of customers increase over the past few weeks. Ernie s on Walnut expects to see more customers when the Show-Me State Games comes to town. We ve seen almost all of our regulars make it back, Spurling said. With the increase of customers due to the many graduations, Spurling said he had to adjust his business.

Show Me State Games Pumpkin Fun Run returns after fall 2020 cancellation

COLUMBIA - Missouri s Show Me State Games held its 8th Annual Pumpkin Fun Run Saturday morning at Phillips Lake Park in Columbia.  Though cancelled last fall due to the pandemic, the games hosted a not your average Pumpkin Fun Run to make up for the missed event, according to Executive Director Dave Fox.  This is the opportunity for us to bring back an event that s dedicated for kids K-5 in Boone County, Fox said. It creates a little competition and most importantly we are so fortunate and happy to be back and reengaged. We re kind of returning to play, coming out of what s been a really difficult year.

Plans for a competition pool to replace the Hickman pool in the works

A 1974 graduate, Maledy said there were P.E. sections in the pool her sophomore and junior years. As a high school girl, messing up your hair in the middle of the day wasn t desirable, Maledy said. In high school, your appearance mattered, and it took time to do your hair. The 1969 Hickman High School yearbook, Cresset, on one page with photos notes that Hickman swimmers completed their first season in their own pool with a perfect 9-0 record. The 1968 yearbook said the pool was unfinished. The pool is mentioned briefly in a school district history Public School Education in Columbia, which states the pool and a wing of classrooms were part of bond issues approved in 1962, 1964, 1966 and 1968.
