The parade was cancelled hours before it was to get underway on Sunday, August 7, 2022, citing security concerns stemming from a lack of volunteers for the event.

Montreal Pride this year was supposed to be a big one. Two years of pandemic cancellations had set high expectations for this year’s march, cancelled only hours before it was intended to begin. Although proud Montrealers gathered in droves regardless, the last-minute axing of such a prominent event raised confusion and concern. Some even speculated that there was something suspicious about the closure.

One day after Montreal Pride abruptly cancelled the parade just hours before it was set to begin, organizers didnt have much to say about how poorly they managed the festivals marquee event. And now there are concerns about how the embarrassing mistake could hurt the citys reputation.

If there is a bright side, it lies in the two impromptu marches that took place Sunday afternoon, after the parade was cancelled.

The executive director of Montreal Pride said the lack of security staff that forced the last-minute cancellation of Sunday's parade boils down to an oversight: People needed to be hired and they never were.
