A man who was part of a group that robbed a Chatsworth family and killed its matriarch has been handed a life sentence.

Sentencing proceedings began on Tuesday in the Durban High Court where the State asked for no less than life for the murder of Jinsee Ram and 15 years for the robbery.

Bheki Msomi, 46, was convicted for the murder of Jinsee Ram and the attempted murder of her daughter Sangetha Prithipaul, as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Ahead of sentencing proceedings, Sangetha Prithipaul, who is the daughter of slain Jinsee Ram, said she was expecting nothing less than life with no prospect of parole to be handed to the accused, Bheki Msomi.

Bobby Ram was speaking outside the Durban High Court after Bheki Msomi was convicted for the murder of Jinsee Ram, the attempted murder of her daughter Sangetha Prithipaul, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Judge Mohini Moodley grilled the State on its heads of arguments around the merits of the case submitted to her registrar on Wednesday. On Thursday in court, Moodley said she would deliver her judgment on Monday.

Even though Bheki Msomi was not the one who physically killed Jinsee Ram, Judge Mohini Moodley found that he did not try to stop Simphiwe Cele who was strangling the elderly woman.

Jinsee Ram, 73, was allegedly strangled to death in her Khawarstan home during a robbery, where four assailants, including her employee, entered her home after lying in wait in her garage in May 2020.
