The 22nd Law Commission, headed by former Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, is set to recommend the addition of a new chapter on simultaneous polls in the Constitution, sources said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has proposed holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies in India. However, implementing this proposal faces numerous hurdles, both practical and constitutional, raising concerns about its potential impact on India’s federal structure and democratic principles.

The committee is mandated to examine and make recommendations for holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities and panchayats keeping in view the existing constitutional framework.
