Puget Sound Naval Shipyard finds new space for old records in underground tunnels

Former Kitty Hawk heads for dry dock, could generate odor

The shipyard is warning that the work may come with a smell.  While the Navy is taking actions to reduce any impacts, the odor may be detectable in surrounding communities beyond the installation’s fence line, the shipyard said in a release, noting that containment systems and prompt shipment will be in place to minimize odor by capturing and properly disposing of the marine growth.   The shipyard had hoped to get the venerable vessel into dry dock Friday but winds delayed the move. It will be scheduled next week. Work the shipyard s dry dock six should last about 2 1/2 months.  Decommissioned in 2009 after a 48-year career, Kitty Hawk has since bobbed in Sinclair Inlet at the Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility, as it is known. The warship s hull has to be cleaned of any kelp, barnacles and overall marine growth before its transport to be dismantled to thwart the spread of invasive species, the shipyard said.
